We are NOT intentionally obtuse when we describe our products. We are simply using the trade lingua franca.

Starting with the Hardwood Price List:
All the hardwood is priced per board foot (bd. ft.). A board foot is a board 1" thick times 12" wide timex 12" long. However, lumber is usually bought Random/Random (R/R) - random width/random length. An easy way to determine the board footage of any one piece is the following formula:

Thickness x Width x Length (all in inches)
144 (all in inches)

Example: 1.75" x 5" x 72"
Example: 144
Example: = 4.4 bd. ft. (rounded off)

Now that leads into the next point. For your benefit I said 1.75" when describing the thickness. But our headings state the thickness as 4/4", 5/4", 6/4", etc. There are four quarters in an inch and so - 1", 1.25", and 1.5".

S&B indicates the grades Select & Better. Simply put (and this is a barebones definition), it tells you how wide the boards are, and how many knots are allowed. So the lumber is usally 4" to 8" wide and any one board must be 83% clear. Again, let's not get too complicated and so traet the above as a rough guide.

D2s, D3s, and D4s:
An indication of the number of sides/edges of the lumber that has been planed.

Shorts:
Our Term - stands for lumber we have culled resulting in boards 2 to 6 feet long. They are S&B.

In regards to the Softwoods - Pine, Hemlock and White Cedar, pricing is per linear/running foot.

Finally, Ipe is not an acronym. It is a Brazilian hardwood used for decking. It is very hard (3 x's harder than Red Oak), very durable (last a minimum of 25 years without treatment), and has the combustion rate of a concrete block.
