Birch wood has somewhat of a dull, low natural luster appearance with a straight or slightly wavy fine grain pattern. Birch is not very durable, and will readily rot and decay if exposed to the outdoor elements. For this reason it is very vulnerable to insect attacks. Birch wood is generally easy to work with hand and machine tools and turns, glues, and finishes well. It is used primarily for plywood, boxes, crates, turned objects, interior trim, and other small specialty wood items.
