Butternut wood’s heartwood is usually a light to medium tan, sometimes with a reddish tint, where its sapwood is a pale yellowish white. Its grain is typically straight, with a medium to coarse texture and a natural silky luster. Butternut wood is moderately durable to decay resistance and is also susceptible to insect attacks. It is easily worked with both hand and machine tools but because it is a softer hardwood, it has a tendency to leave some fuzzy surfaces after planing or sanding. It is recommended to use sharp cutters and fine-grit sandpaper when working with Butternut wood. Its common uses are veneer, carving, furniture, interior trim, boxes, and crates.
