The most important step in ensuring the ideal product is how the boards are cut from the log itself. Which method you choose will have a profound result on the quality of the wood. One of the most common methods for cutting lumber is flat cutting or flat sawing. This is where the Douglas Fir log is run through the blade repeatedly at the same angle. This uniformity of cuts yeilds a range of grain patterns, but the most common is a wavy, or "cathedral" grain. Flat cut or sawn douglas fir is more commonly used for paneling, siding, framing lumber, and is sometimes used for flooring.
